There are also directories which is a web search tool complileid manually by editors. The best examples are Yahoo! and DMOZ. A crawler based search engine uses either an index, crawler/spider, or search engine software.

Crawler based search engines rank pages by factors including; keywords, table, titles, body, etc. With a human powered directory webmasters have to submit a short description to the directory for the entire site.
Search engines also rank pages by on-page and off-page factors. On page factors consist of keywords, html tags, content, anchor text, and URLs. Off-page factors consist of link analysis and link popularity. Edu. is the most powerful voice in ranking by links because they are viewed as more official and responsible sites.
